Diane von Furstenberg is one of the world’s most successful fashion designers. She was born in Brusells, Belgium in 1946 as Diane Simone Michelle Halfin. She studied at the University of Geneva where she met Prince Egon von Furstenberg, who became her husband, and gave her 2 children.
Later, Diane was taking the fashion world by storm by the time she was in her late ’20s.
While in her 20’s, Diane arrived to the United States, bringing a suitcase full of jersey dresses she’d created while working at her friend Angelo Feretti’s Italian mill.
The wrap dress was actually an experiment, because she didn’t created the wrap dress, she just reinvented it. Her version of dress was a collared, long-sleeved shirt that wrapped around the torso in a flattering way, designed to hide all the imperfections – this made the dress an instant sensation.
This dress was created to symbolize power and independence for a generation of women.

Her first collection was presented at the Gotham Hotel in New York City. At first, because she had little experience in the industry, Diane worked with major women’s clothing manufacturers, but in just a couple of years she managed to establish her own manufacturing business.
It’s not surprising that by the end of the ’70s, Diane had sold over a million of her signature garment. This dress made every woman feel extremely comfortable and sexy. Plus, the dress worked as a comfortable business garment and an elegant evening gown. Before the popular wrap dress, she created a sweater dress, named after the black activist Angela Davis.
At only 29 years old, Diane was featured on the cover of Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal and created a fragrance named Tatiana, after her daughter.

In 1997, Diane re-launched the brand with renewed vitality. Other designers like J. Crew or Alexander McQueen have noticed how flattering this dress can be and have created their own versions.
